What is Social Security Disability Insurance?

Social Security Disability Insurance, sometimes known as SSDI or even simply ‘disability,’ is part of the Social Security program. Instead of retirement payments, however, disability is a series of monthly benefits to workers unable to work due to illness or impairment.

The SSDI program pays benefits to disabled workers – and occasionally their family members – based on the disabled worker’s past earnings.

To be eligible for these benefits, a disabled worker must be considered “insured.” Each state has different requirements that qualify an individual as “insured,” usually involving:

  • How long they worked
  • How recently they worked
  • Whether or not their job was covered by Social Security

Eligibility for Social Security Disability Benefits in Indiana

Qualifications for SSDI benefits can vary from state to state. To know if you qualify for SSDI benefits in Indiana, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does your condition prevent you from working?
  • Is your condition severe?
  • Is your condition on the SSA’s listing of impairments?
  • Are you unable to do your previous work?
  • Are you unable to do other work?

SSDI claims are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if you answered “yes” to several of these questions, then you may have a strong case and should consult an Indiana social security disability lawyer as soon as possible.

Social Security Disability Insurance vs. Supplemental Security Income

Individuals must achieve certain requirements to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance.

On the other hand, Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is available for individuals who haven’t worked or earned enough in a quarter to qualify for SSDI.

This protection exists for individuals who are disabled and need supplemental insurance regardless of work status.
